Artistic Statement and Curriculum

Artistic statement

For all practical purposes, in the field of graphic art, I am self-taught. Through the years I have tried out many drawing and painting techniques, from pencil and ink to pastel and acrylic, without forgetting oil, naturally. I also tried my hand at the traditional technique of stone lithography. Nowadays, my favorite tool is a feltpen on Bristol paper. I love that medium. It is, much like me, clean, precise and efficient...

My approach  is resolutely figurative, or more precisely, para-figurative. I take an interest in reality and in everything  that surrounds, upholds and borders this reality. I was most strongly influenced by such painters and graphists as Bosch, Dürer, Escher and Kim Scott, as well as, but in a rather incongruous way, by both the expressionist and the Pop Art movements! Being an offspring of this cultural melting-pot, my conception of graphic art is thus as rational as it is emotional.

I have always drawn with a passion, but in January of 2009, I decided to invest more of my energy in my graphic abilities! So I started to produce, intensively!  More than forty years ago, my first drawings often pictured strange beings, half animal, half dragon. They were closely inspired by traditional heraldry. Today, I have come full circle, and I go back to my roots as I deepen the concept of Graphic Encounter.

In French heraldry, the word "rencontre" (meaning encounter) is, quite unexpectedly, masculine in gender. It refers to the head of an animal seen full face and presenting both eyes. I stretched the concept a little so that it would encompass humans as well as animals, and sometimes the number of the eyes seems less important than the intensity of the emotion they convey! But, little by little, and without it becoming my only type of drawing, I have allowed the concept of "rencontre" to take more and more place in my artistic inspiration.

On a chromatic level, I am most happy when I work with the warmest colors. I would even say that most of my encounters are torrid... Obviously I use every color on the scale, but my greens and my blues are a bit shy.
